4 Spatial Reasoning Enhancing Games for Adolescent and Adult Learners
The following four games feature mechanics and experiences that require players to exercise their visual-spatial reasoning skills to solve 2d and 3d problems in a fun way.
The enhancement of spatial intelligence skills could help learners improve their performance in engineering, architecture, chemistry, sports, and art.
1. Off The Line:
This minimalistic speed and geometry game was developed by Bryan Perfetto for the 2018 js13kGames coding competition.
20 levels with interesting designs which you must solve by sweeping all yellow squares by either clicking the left mouse button or hitting the space bar, which propels your blue player at full speed in a perpendicular angle “off the line” you happen to be traversing.
It is available online for free.
Inspired by the classic strategy game of chess, Board Defenders features a cast of kids on a playground, and it is as if they were mixing it with hopscotch, four square, and Space Invaders.
What makes it unique is that, unlike chess, rivals come in waves, stepping forward all at once every turn, without letting the player plan several moves over a static scenario, giving it a nice element of urgency that is stimulating.
It is available on mobile and Windows. There is also a paid version on Steam.
3. Hocus:
A cube that rotates on one of its axes across a closed, convoluted path, featuring the additional difficulty of following impossible, M.C. Escher-like geometries, which enforce new, unexpected rules of movement.
However, despite all these constraints, playing it feels relaxing, especially with the music and sound effects provided.
It is available on mobile, Windows and Mac.
4. Lara Croft GO:
This game recreates the atmosphere of archeological wonder of the original Tomb Raider. The players of the original games will appreciate the return to the polygonal aesthetic of the early days of the franchise.
It features beautiful levels and a genuinely nice palette. Nevertheless, it is also quite challenging once you start climbing up the levels, but it is never so punishing that players abandon it in frustration. It offers a nice, balanced brain workout.
It is available on mobile, Windows, Mac, Linux and PlayStation.
